Tour details | ■Bihoro Pass (Source: Bihoro Town HP) From the Bihoro Pass Observation Deck at an altitude of 525 meters, you can see Lake Kussharo, the largest caldera lake in Japan, and Mt. Iouzan, which still spews smoke, in the distance. A magnificent panorama of the Shiretoko Mountain Range and heavy snow peaks spreads out. Because of its beautiful scenery, Bihoro Pass is said to be one of the most spectacular views in the world, and is crowded with many tourists every year. ■Lake Kussharo/Sunayu (Source: Teshikaga Navi) Just dig into the sand and you'll have an open-air bath in no time. Sunayu is such an exciting and fun spot. Depending on your efforts, you can create an open-air bath of any size you like, so not only small children but even adults will feel like children digging in the sand. There are campgrounds and rest houses along the lake, and it is a lively spot year-round with tourists buying souvenirs and eating meals. It is warm here due to the heat from the hot springs, so even during the coldest months, it never freezes here. The winter scene of flocks of whooper swans that have migrated from Siberia resting together has become a typical feature of the sand baths. Spring quality: Sodium/hydrogen carbonate spring ■Mount Io (Source: Teshikaga Navi) ``Atosanupuri'', the source of the hot water at the famous hot spring ``Kawayu Onsen'', means ``naked mountain'' in the Ainu language. As the name suggests, there are no trees growing on the mountain surface, and volcanic smoke rises from here and there making a gurgling noise. It is said that there are more than 1,000 volcanic plumes, and the surrounding area is filled with the unique smell of sulfur. It has been affectionately known by the locals as ``Mt. Sulfur'' for many years, and it never ceases to amaze visitors with its dynamic nature, as you can see the fumarole right in front of your eyes. This mountain once prospered for sulfur mining, and the railroad that was built to transport the mined sulfur laid the foundation for the development of the town of Teshikaga. You can learn about what it was like in the past at the exhibition at the base of Mt. Io MOKMOK, which was renovated and renewed in 2023. From the parking lot, you can walk along gravel to get right up to the fumarole. Please experience the dynamic heartbeat of the earth. The fumaroles and sulfur crystals of Atosanupuri are designated as Teshikaga Town's "Specified Natural Tourism Resources," and most of the mountain is designated as a restricted area based on the Ecotourism Promotion Act. Please be careful not to waste valuable resources. *The ``Atosanupuri Trekking Tour,'' where you climb Atosanupuri and enjoy this precious natural beauty, is given special permission to enter by a guide certified by Teshikaga Town. ■Mashu First Observation Deck (Source: Teshikaga Navi) This is the most popular observation deck overlooking Lake Mashu, and is visited by more than 1 million people every year. From the observation deck, you can enjoy a spectacular view of the Mashu Blue Lake, Kamuishu Island, and Kamuinupuri (Mt. Mashu), which rises as if to protect the lake. In 2022, the rest house will be renovated as ``Lake Mashu Kamui Terrace,'' a facility where you can relax and enjoy the view of the nature of Lake Mashu. You can enjoy the seasonal scenery from the rooftop terrace and indoor lounge. |
